Michael Jackson is dead. The King of Pop or just as recently called, the Tragic Prince is gone from this earth, passed away with the as yet unexplained stop of his heart. We have been bombarded with the news, detailing his last hour to reviewing his career and tabloid headlines. Scenes have been replayed from his ground-breaking performance of the moonwalk, his disheveled appearance in court facing child molestation charges, to the dangling of his son off a German hotel room balcony. Misunderstood artist or Wacko Jacko? He was an enigma for sure but for me, it was all about the music. The pure R&B pop music accompanied by dance performances unmatched to this day. It was only appropriate that I hear of his passing through my mother. She knew first hand of me and my brother’s fascination with the King of Pop. A well-worn videotape of the making of and performance of his music video, Thriller is a memento of our childhood. We used to watch it at least once a day. I still tease my brother even now recalling him hiding behind the couch when the “scary” parts would come up. It was worth it to him though as we would sit mesmorized by the dance choreography, caught up in the story unfolded through pure pop music. My favorite song of all time is Human Nature. In fact, as I had told people on Thursday night, Michael Jackson was the only male pin-up on my wall growing up. It was a poster from that single’s release. I play that song now as I write this. As a DJ, I have always played Michael Jackson whether it was at a wedding or more recently, an 18+ gay dance party. I will do so this this Wednesday at Integration with a music tribute to the King of Pop. I’ll do it for his fans that come but I have to be honest, it will mostly be for me. It will be my own goodbye and my own salute to the man, no matter how controversial who brought those timeless songs and performances to the world.
